Truth and Reconciliation: A First Nation Chief's Perspective on Justice, Unity, and Progress

by Chief Terry Richardson

As we approach Truth and reconciliation day, I thought I would share a few thoughts on a perspective from a Chief in a First nation community.

Why is this day important to First Nations?

I would say that if we look at all the injustices that First Nations people have endured as well as what we continue to experience it is important that we as a society in Canada recognize that and strive to do better. As First Nations people it is important that we explain that history and ensure that the country of Canada strive to do better in the treatment of First nations people in this country.

We as First Nations people must strive to ensure that we continue to be heard and that the people of Canada understand where we are coming from. We talk of reconciliation, but often it is just a word and it is important that actions are taken to ensure that reconciliation actually occurs. As First nations we must continue to explain our injustices and to gather support from our non-First Nation people so that more people understand the injustices experienced by First Nation people. We need to elect governments that will be inclusive to all people especially understanding where First Nations history and the need to consult First nations in this country.

Finally, my hope is that eventually First nations will be treated not as a second-class citizen but rather as a leader in this country. I can look at New Brunswick where we have much work to do especially when you deal with some provincial governments that do not. Look at the bigger picture but strive to be re-elected on a term-by-term basis. We are the First nation people of Canada and in New Brunswick we are on unceded and un-surrendered land that has been held under the peace and friendship treaties signed by our ancestors but never respected.

My hope that is eventually we will be able to negotiate and take our rightful place in our homelands because the reality is united as a people we are strong but divided we are week.
