Honouring MMIWG: A Powerful Day of Remembrance and Healing in Pabineau First Nation
The Pabineau First Nation Health Team recently organized a deeply moving event in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2-Spirit people (MMIWG). The event was centered around creating awareness, healing, and honoring the lives lost, beginning with a powerful presentation by guest speaker Stephanie Francis, titled "Bird in a Cage."
Stephanie's presentation offered a poignant look into the realities Indigenous women face and shedding light on the ongoing issue of violence against Indigenous women and girls. Her words resonated with the audience, offering not only an education on this national tragedy but also a call to action for justice and support.
After the presentation, the gathering moved to the MMIWG Monument, where a group of women led the community in drumming—a sound of resilience and strength that echoed through the air, offering honor to those we have lost.
In a moment of collective reflection, the group then walked over to the Sacred Fire, where each attendee was invited to offer tobacco—a sacred gesture in Indigenous culture—sending prayers for the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2-Spirit people.
The day concluded with a traditional feast, where everyone came together to share a meal in unity and healing. The gathering was not just a time for remembrance but a strong reminder of the importance of community, culture, and support as we continue to fight for justice for MMIWG.
This event reminded us of the importance of keeping these conversations alive and ensuring that the stories of these women are not forgotten.
