Migmawe'l Tplu'taqnn Incorporated (MTI) is a not-for-profit organization created by the Mi’gmag First Nations in New Brunswick. Its objectives include promoting and supporting the recognition, affirmation, exercise, and implementation of the Aboriginal and Treaty rights; the right of self-determination; political, cultural, economic, educational and social development; justice and equity; wider respect and understanding; and general awareness of its member communities and their Mi’gmag laws, rights, values, traditions, customs and practices.
Job Description
The Indigenous Monitor position includes, but is not limited to, the following key job functions and responsibilities:
Participating with NB Power consultants and other NB Power staff in studies including and not limited to environmental walk-overs, archaeological surveys, bird surveys etc.
Rotating with little intervention among the various NB Power contractors as per schedules and advising of needed changes and/or accommodations with respect to the scheduling of project or operational activities.
Providing information regarding project, maintenance or operational activities directly to the consultation support bodies/consultative representatives in the vicinity (following a review by NB Power to verify technical information).
Providing information regarding assigned NB Power activities directly to NB Power for distribution to all Nations. It is recognized that some specifics (i.e. GPS coordinates of species of interest) may be redacted from the reports.
Identifying potential resources for harvesting/gathering for traditional purposes where an Indigenous Knowledge and Land Use Study (IKLUOS) has been carried out by MTI and in accordance with the Project Specific Environmental Management Plan (PSEMP) and confirming their availability for gathering and harvesting (ensuring that the resources are on lands that gathering and harvesting is legally possible). For MTI, IK Studies are to be carried out in accordance with MTI's NBMIKSG.
Assisting in the collection and preparation of environmental samples.
Engaging and coordinating with community members as required to gather the resources for traditional purposes in a manner that meets all safety and other legal requirements.
Understanding, monitoring, and ensuring adherence to commitments made in response to First Nations interests as documented in the Project Specific Environmental Management Plan (including facilitating community involvement with contractors and providing updates on project activity for community members).
Reporting any issues or concerns, including those from the Community, immediately to NB Power (i.e. Construction Manager, Site Manager and/or First Nations' Affairs)
as well as their respective Nations as appropriate and facilitate resolution.
Report to MTI through the Director of Energy and Mines.
Participating in project or site orientation and safety training as required
Participating in daily tailboard meetings and report plan for field activities to the Construction/Site Manager to ensure good understanding of the location and plan for the day.
Assisting NB Power staff in other laboratory related duties.
Recommending additional sampling and/or changes in practice to address areas of
Aboriginal/Indigenous interest.
Potential to have to mobilize to study location within short notice.
Working hours may vary based on project requirements from MTI and NB Power, and seasonality.
Production of a written report within 5 days of the termination of a project's activities or as required by MTI and NB Power.
For the work related to the Point Lepreau site, security and site general employee site training, including security clearance (criminal record checks etc.) will be required.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
A diploma from a technical college, or bachelor's degree in a field such as environmental science
3-5 years experience in resources or mining
Some experience in analyzing environmental sample data and reporting results to regulatory bodies and/or stakeholders
TECHNICAL
Demonstrated safety and environmental leadership, in adherence to MTI values;
Ability to meet strict deadlines, pre-established targets and work under pressure.
Knowledge of relevant provincial and federal legislation.
A proven ability to develop and implement solutions to complex environmental issues and facilitate continuous improvement in performance.
LEADERSHIP
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
High confidentiality standards and ability to exercise good judgment.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc)
Must hold a valid driver's license and have an acceptable criminal record check.
Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS Candidate will be required to perform their job in a variety of settings, including offices, field work, and at times, the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station. He/she must be physically fit and have the ability to travel by foot and vehicle. Note: Travel is a requirement. Candidates' knowledge of the Indigenous language, culture and the Indigenous communities of New Brunswick will be given the highest consideration. In addition, Mi gmawe'l Tplu'taqnn Incorporated may give preferential consideration to candidates who are members of one of the Indigenous communities of New Brunswick.
SALARY: The position is dependent on confirmation of funding. Salary will be based on experience.
