Celebrating Achievements: Pabineau Members Graduate from Mi’gmaq Peacekeeping Inc. Program
Hello Pabineau community,
We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to two outstanding members who have recently graduated from the Mi’gmaq Peacekeeping Inc. (MPI) program. Today, we take a moment to honor their dedication, hard work, and commitment to enhancing community well-being.
The Mi’gmaq Peacekeeping Inc. program is a groundbreaking initiative committed to establishing unarmed peacekeepers as the primary responders in Mi’gmaq communities. Our graduates have undergone comprehensive training, equipping them with the skills needed to address a range of issues, including mental health, addiction, generational trauma, gender-based violence, and colonial legacies.
This unique program places a strong emphasis on early intervention, deterrence, and de-escalation strategies, ensuring the maintenance of community well-being. It stands out as an alternative approach to community safety, distinct from enforcement-centric methods employed by traditional police or RCMP. MPI recognizes the limitations of conventional policing in meeting the unique needs of our communities, aiming to overcome challenges such as over-reliance on external law enforcement, extended response times, and cultural insensitivity.
While open to collaboration with police forces and other frontline organizations when necessary, MPI's primary goal is to empower peacekeepers to assess situations and determine the feasibility of de-escalation. This approach seeks to minimize dependence on external agencies and enhance community-specific responses.
Central to MPI's mission is a focus on justice and community safety, incorporating Mi’gmaq laws, Indigenous knowledge, and relevant reports into their practices. By doing so, they aim to address issues comprehensively and promote the well-being of the communities they serve.
Once again, congratulations to our graduates for their achievements, and we look forward to witnessing the positive impact they will undoubtedly make in our community.
