Position: Atlantic Salmon Smolt Wheel Technician / Short-Term Project
Job Summary: The Pabineau First Nations (PFN) have partnered with the Atlantic Salmon
Federation (ASF) to deploy a Rotary Screw Trap (RST) in the Nepisiguit River. The primary
goal is to determine freshwater productivity and survival at sea for Atlantic salmon smolts. These
smolts are collected using the RST and tagged with stream and PIT tags. The collected data will
contribute to population assessments and provide insights into habitat features, aiding in the
management of the Nepisiguit salmon population.
Primary Responsibilities:
RST Preparation and Deployment:
Assist in assembling and deploying the RST at approved sites.
Anchor and position the RST in designated locations for operation.
Daily Monitoring and Documentation:
Record and document daily catches.
Assist with fish identification during processing, including measuring total length,
weight, scale samples, and fin clips.
Tag fish using stream and PIT or acoustic tags.
RST Maintenance:
Perform general maintenance to keep the RST operational.
Tasks include debris removal, adjusting position based on water levels, and trap
maintenance throughout the trapping period.
Data Management:
Maintain accurate records of conditions, RST operations, and fish details (e.g., fish
counts, IDs, tag numbers).
Enter data into datasheets and logbooks daily, then transcribe it accurately into computer
spreadsheets (e.g., Excel).
Some data analysis and interpretation may be required.
Disassembly and Removal:
Disassemble and remove the RST from the site when needed.
Other Responsibilities:
Review and understand RST safety protocols and procedures.
Work in a safe and responsible manner.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience with equipment maintenance is beneficial.
Smolt Wheel/RST Training is an asset.
Additional Requirements:
Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks.
Availability for extended hours and emergency response.
Shift Work.
This role plays a crucial part in understanding and conserving the Nepisiguit salmon
population.
