Creating a Respectful Work Place & Bullying Policies

Our vision is to foster a facility of safety and inclusion for both staff and our patients. To create this we have laid out a blog post explaining disrespectful behaviours that will not be tolerated.

What Constitutes Disrespectful Behavior?

Disrespectful behaviour encompasses actions or remarks that are unsuitable, belittling, or otherwise offensive, with the intention of creating an uncomfortable, antagonistic, or intimidating atmosphere.

Such behaviour can occur within or outside of a professional setting.

Understanding Bullying:

Bullying involves aggressive acts encompassing physical and/or psychological abuse initiated by an individual or a group targeting one or more individuals.

This conduct is purposeful, recurrent, vengeful, and lacks respect, aiming to victimize through humiliation, intimidation, and disempowerment.

Exploring Harassment:

Harassment encompasses actions that degrade, shame, or embarrass an individual, actions that a reasonable person should recognize as unwelcome.

This encompasses and action of physical contact, brandishing or threatening with weapons, comments (such as jokes), or displays (like cartoons).

Harassment can manifest as sexual, personal, verbal, or physical misconduct.

When appropriate, it's acceptable to directly request the cessation of such behavior.

The Concept of a Respectful Workplace:

A respectful workplace thrives on being nurturing, secure, and encouraging, valuing diversity. Here, both team members and clients are esteemed, communication is polite and considerate, and individuals are treated with courtesy and dignity.

Conflict is managed constructively and politely, while any form of disrespectful conduct is not tolerated and is properly addressed.

Recommended Course of Action:

If an individual conversation feels unsafe or intimidating, seeking guidance and support from the Health Director or a trusted colleague is advised.

The Health Director will take necessary measures to resolve the situation.

Resources Available at Pabineau First Nation Health Center:

The center provides materials like posters and documents that center around:

- Creating a Respectful Workplace for both staff and clients.

- Guidelines on Client Rights and Responsibilities within a Respectful Workplace.

- Necessary Organizational Practices to Address Workplace Violence.

It's noteworthy that Accreditation Canada has embraced a modified definition of workplace violence, in line with the International Labor Organization, encompassing instances where a person faces threats, abuse, or assault related to their work. This includes various forms of harassment, bullying, intimidation, threats, assaults, robbery, and other intrusive behaviors. Such behaviors might arise from clients or colleagues at any level of the organization.
