Patricia Roy's Multi-Faceted Role

Pre-Natal, Post-Natal, and Birth Control

  • Immunization - Being certified by the Department of Health to provide immunization for the prevention and treatment of a variety of health conditions, Patricia provides immunization service to our babies and young children for the prevention of Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Meningitis (2 types), Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, and Influenza.
  • Maternal Child Health Disease/Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disease – Patricia provides information and counseling to the mothers and children of the community in the effort to assist in developing good maternal & child related connectedness and relationships. This approach is coordinated through scheduled visits between the mother, children, and the nurse. Patricia provides access to numerous resources, including The Healthy Pregnancy website, a one-stop online shop that provides valuable information and easy steps to follow for a healthy pregnancy, including information on nutrition, tobacco, alcohol, physical activity, oral health, folic acid and mental health .
  • Pre-Natal & Post Natal Program - Patricia supports mothers living in the community with basic prenatal nutritional needs and vitamins. The nurse offers and provides pre-natal education to expectant parents as well as the opportunity to receive individual prenatal class information for labor, delivery and post-natal care. Pregnancy testing is also an available upon request.
  • Birth Control - Patricia provides birth control education and support to community members upon request.  Condoms are made available to community members as well as education related to a variety of birth control methods.

Children’s Oral Health Initiative

  • Patricia is responsible for the review of the reporting processes carried out by the Certified Children’s Oral Health Initiative Worker.
Mental Health and Addictions

Patricia provides a variety of mental health and addictions support, including:

  • Participation and support for critical counseling needs and medical referrals
  • Overseeing the community-based Methadone dispensing program, which is delivered by our LPN, Jason Doucet, and operated with the collaboration a local pharmacy and the Regional Health Authority, Vitalité.
  • Collaborating with Regional Health Authority, Vitalité, to provide mental health services to members of the community, a model which has been described by Vitalité as being a ‘first’ that will be used in setting up services with other First Nations. 
  • Responding to the requests for mental health counseling and support from individuals, couples, and families that are experiencing mental health crisis situations.
  • Responding to suicide attempts or threats and helping clients and their families with medical and psychiatric, and psychological referrals and follow up care.
